Buying a car out of state?

Saran Stealy: They might give you a temp plate and they may not. You have your bill of sale and your paperwork, and you have however long the grace period is in MI to tag a purchased vehicle. While traveling, temp tag or not, your bill of sale and copy of your insurance are sufficient as long as you are in the grace period of your state. You will not pay tax in Tenn., but rather in MI. Florida likes you to get a Florida only license, but your tag should be fine as you are just temporarily staying....Show more

Morris Cuomo: While you have a Mi drivers lisc, you can keep the Mi plates on the car, but if you are in FL for a year you need to recheck that requirement. As fo buying a car in Tenn and registering it in MI, check with the MI DMV because you may end up paying sales tax on the car in Tenn and again in MI.

Imogene Neiswander: If the car is currently registered, you'd need to go to the DMV in TN to get a temporary registration to legally drive the car aro! und. However, if you don't, the police would just give you a fixit type of ticket and once you registered the car, you should be fine. Of course you need insurance. If you plan to stay in FL for more than a couple of months, you'd legally need to get FL plates. Of course lots of people don't and the worst that will happen is you get a ticket and have to register the car in FL and the ticket gets dismissed. For someone who seems interested in following the law (temporary registration) you sure seem intent on not following the law once you get the car!...Show more
