Motorcycle street legal requirements?

Lucien Hellerman: I can save you a whole lot of trouble. You can not make an off road only motorcycle street legal. It does not matter what equipment you add to the bike, it will still be an off road only motorcycle.DMV will NOT give tags for an off road only motorcycle.

Collin Pelfrey: Your State will have the Vehicle Code available, either on-line or in a public library. My State is California, the code is available at: http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/calawquery?codes...Division12 covers the equipment of vehicles. But lights and such are trivial. To be legal on the street you need more than equipment, you need to be registered for the street for a vehicle license plate. To register a vehicle you have to certify the emmissions, smog equipment. That is not under the Vehicle Code, it is a covered by the Health and Safety Code.Bottom line -- it isn't happening....Show more

Ginny Trickett: It not only depends on what state you're in, but also on what county. ! Arizona has pretty lax equipment requirements, and some of my friends have registered enduro bikes for the street by adding lights, horn, etc. Only a few of the counties even require smog checks, so that part is usually easy to get through. Yes, the People's Republik of Kalifornia has practically impossible regs. Probably the best bet for getting really good detailed info is to put in the hours to go through each state's regulations individually and keep gathering more info directly from people who've done this kind of project. Good luck & have fun!...Show more

Luther Plagmann: This Site Might Help You.RE:Motorcycle street legal requirements?I am just trying to find different state's requirements on making an off-road motorcycle street legal. Such as: Headlights, blinkers, brake light etc. Does anyone know of a state to state requirements site? I can't find one anywhere, not even the DMV website. I am probably missing it....Show more

Antone Bual: Check with ! the AMA (american motorcycle association), I think they may ha! ve a listing compiled, or could help you. I have a street legal XR650R in MI. Good luck.

Elsie Resner: Street Legal Motorcycle Requirements

Susan Rambo: In most states, if a motorcycle comes from the factory designated as "Off Road Use Only", it can not be made street legal. Contact your local DMV and ask if it is even possible to make an off road bike street legal before you invest the time and money. You wouldn't want to spend a couple hundred dollars on parts for your bike only to find out that the DMV will not issue a plate for it. Even if you can make the bike street legal in your state, you may find the alterations will cost more than what it is worth. Sell the bike and use the money from the sale to purchase a dual sport bike that will work both on and off road....Show more

Erica Bottaro: The NHTSA may have what your looking for. Look here http://www.nhtsa.gov/cars/rules/import/FAQ%20Site/...This deals with mostly importation and certification of mo! torcycles and scooters, but most states follow the NHTSA guidelines as far as lights, horns, etc. The exceptions are mostly for year of manufacture and what rules were in place at the time. As for state requirements, look for inspection requirements on the DMV web site. As an example, some states say your plate must centered, horizontal and well illuminated on the rear fender, where others just say it must be illuminated. Let me know what state and what you're trying to do and I may be able to help more....Show more
